What Is Dynamics 365 Field Service

From Customer Request to Completed Visit

Dynamics 365 Field Service is Microsoft's field service management application, part of the Dynamics 365 customer engagement family. It manages work orders, scheduling and dispatch, technician mobile work, customer assets, preventive maintenance agreements and parts inventory on Microsoft Dataverse, sharing customer records with Dynamics 365 Customer Service and Sales. Dispatchers plan on a schedule board with optional optimisation and scheduling agents, technicians work from a mobile app that runs offline, and Connected Field Service can create work orders from equipment alerts. MageBytes implements Field Service around your service model and connects it to your ERP for parts and billing.

Plan My Field Service Project
  • Right technician, first time

Skills, territories and availability guide scheduling, so jobs go to someone who can fix them.

  • Everything on the device

Job details, asset history, checklists and parts are on the technician's phone or tablet, even offline.

  • Visits flow to billing

Time, parts and completed work feed invoicing in your ERP without manual rekeying.

How We Work

From Service Review to Go-Live

Timelines depend on workforce size, asset data, integrations and mobile requirements — we confirm them after discovery.

  1. 1

    Field Discovery

We review how jobs are requested, scheduled and completed today, including ride-alongs or interviews with technicians where useful.

  2. 2

    Design

Work order model, scheduling rules, mobile experience, asset structure and ERP integration are designed and signed off.

  3. 3

    Configure & Build

Field Service and the mobile app are configured in a development environment, with integrations built alongside.

  4. 4

    Pilot & Test

A pilot group of dispatchers and technicians runs real jobs, including offline scenarios, before wider rollout.

  5. 5

    Rollout & Tuning

Teams go live in stages, with training per role and scheduling rules refined using live data.

In Depth

Planning a Dynamics 365 Field Service Rollout

The decisions that decide whether technicians embrace the system or work around it.

1

Design the mobile experience with technicians

The mobile app is where Field Service succeeds or fails. If technicians must scroll through long forms or lose work when signal drops, adoption suffers quickly. We design mobile forms, checklists and the offline profile with input from the people who will use them, keeping each screen focused on what is needed at that point in the job.

Offline profiles need particular care: they decide which records are on the device when there's no connection. Too little data and technicians are stuck; too much and sync slows down.

2

Scheduling: manual, assisted or optimised

Smaller teams often schedule well from the schedule board with the scheduling assistant, which suggests available resources by skill, location and time. Larger operations may benefit from Resource Scheduling Optimization, an add-in that builds schedules automatically, or from Microsoft's newer scheduling agent features. Each option depends on clean resource data — skills, working hours, territories and start locations — so we get that right first.

  • Resource skills & proficiency
  • Working hours & territories
  • Travel & start locations
  • Booking statuses & rules
3

Assets, agreements and preventive maintenance

For many businesses the long-term value lies in assets. Recording each installed product, its location and its service history lets technicians see what was done last time and lets you sell maintenance agreements with confidence. Agreements can generate recurring work orders and invoices automatically, so planned maintenance happens without someone remembering to book it.

4

Connected Field Service and Copilot

Connected Field Service links Field Service with Azure IoT Hub, so readings from connected equipment can raise alerts and, where rules allow, create work orders before the customer notices a fault. Copilot in Field Service helps with tasks such as summarising work orders and recapping job details. We assess both against your equipment, licences and data before recommending them.

5

Parts, billing and ERP integration

Completed work only creates value once it is invoiced. We integrate Field Service with Business Central, Finance and Supply Chain Management or another ERP so parts used, time spent and agreement billing reach finance automatically, and stock levels in warehouses and vans stay accurate. If you also run Dynamics 365 Customer Service, cases convert into work orders and the outcome flows back to the case. A custom CRM or another platform may suit very small teams with simple scheduling; we'll say so if that applies.
