What Is Finance & SCM

Microsoft's ERP for Complex Operations

Dynamics 365 Finance and Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management are Microsoft's enterprise ERP applications, built on the shared finance and operations platform. Finance covers accounting, budgeting, cash, fixed assets and multi-country compliance; Supply Chain Management covers procurement, inventory, warehousing, transportation, planning and manufacturing. They suit larger organisations with several legal entities, high transaction volumes or complex production. MageBytes implements both apps, builds X++ extensions and integrations, upgrades businesses from Dynamics AX, and connects the ERP to Dataverse, Power Platform and the ecommerce channels around it.

Plan My Finance & SCM Project
  • One platform

Finance, supply chain, warehousing and manufacturing share one data model, so postings flow without custom integration.

  • Connected to Dataverse

Dual-write and APIs link the ERP to Sales, Customer Service, Power Apps and your online store.

  • Copilot-ready

Clean data and security roles set up so Copilot and agent features are useful from the start.

How We Work

Finance & SCM Implementation Lifecycle

Enterprise ERP projects need structure. Timelines depend on scope and are agreed after discovery.

  1. 1

    Discovery & Fit-Gap

We map record-to-report, procure-to-pay, order-to-cash and plan-to-produce against standard functionality.

  2. 2

    Solution Blueprint

Legal entities, configuration, extensions, integrations, data migration and environments are designed and signed off.

  3. 3

    Build & Configure

Configuration and X++ development in sprints, with integrations built and reviewed alongside.

  4. 4

    Migrate & Test

Trial migrations, end-to-end process testing and performance testing with your key users.

  5. 5

    Go-Live & Hypercare

Cut-over, close support through the first period-end, then planned improvements and update testing.

In Depth

Planning a Finance & SCM Implementation

The decisions that shape scope, cost and how well the ERP serves you after go-live.

1

Business Central or Finance and Supply Chain Management?

Business Central is the right choice for many small and mid-sized businesses: it's quicker to implement and covers finance, inventory, warehousing and lighter manufacturing well. Finance and Supply Chain Management fit when complexity is high — many legal entities and countries, advanced warehouse automation, process or mixed-mode manufacturing, high order volumes or detailed cost accounting.

We assess your requirements honestly before licences are bought, and we'll recommend Business Central when it's enough.

2

How an implementation runs

Finance and Supply Chain Management projects follow a structured lifecycle: fit-gap, blueprint, iterative build, data migration, testing and cut-over. Microsoft provides implementation guidance and environment tooling, and updates the apps through regular service updates, so we plan regression testing into every release.

Customisations are built as X++ extensions rather than changes to Microsoft's code, keeping the system upgradeable.

  • Fit-gap & blueprint
  • Sandbox & test environments
  • Regression testing
  • Cut-over planning
3

Upgrading from Dynamics AX

Many Finance and Supply Chain Management customers come from Dynamics AX 2012. Microsoft supports an upgrade path that brings data across, but old overlayered customisations need rebuilding as extensions. We review each one, retire those that standard features now cover, and rebuild the rest, so you finish with less custom code to maintain.

4

Integrations and ecommerce

The ERP rarely works alone. We connect it to Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service through dual-write, to Power BI and Microsoft Fabric for reporting, and to ecommerce stores, marketplaces, banks, carriers and suppliers through data entities and APIs. For retail, Dynamics 365 Commerce runs on the same platform for stores, call centres and online channels.

5

Copilot and agents in finance and operations

Microsoft is adding Copilot and AI agent capabilities to the finance and operations apps with each release wave, from summaries and natural-language help to agents that assist with routine finance and supply chain tasks. Features vary by app and region, so we review what's available when you plan, prepare the data and security behind it, and build custom agents in Copilot Studio where the standard ones don't fit.

6

What drives cost and timeline

The main factors are the number of legal entities and countries, which modules go live, how much X++ development and integration is needed, and the volume and quality of data to migrate. We phase the rollout — often finance and core supply chain first, then warehousing, manufacturing or additional countries. Licences are paid to Microsoft or your licensing provider separately.
